About Us

Balls-U-Like is owned and run by Steph Tossell and Annie Metcalfe with a lot of (unpaid) help from Steph's partner Lloyd and Annie's husband Chris who do the accounts, fix broken computers and printers, run the webshop, load and unload vans as well as providing wine and sympathy when we come unstuck (which is often!)

Balls-U-Like was actually started by accident in 2001! Annie had come back to the UK after living in Australia for a few years and was not sure what to do next, Steph was working but needing a change. She had been making fire poi in her spare time and selling them to friends and aquaintances with a fair amount of success and wondered whether they would sell at a festival. Annie suggested Greenbelt because it was one where we had been going off and on for at least 20 years. So, to cut a long story short, we bought some props and made a lot of poi , found the old orange frame tent in the garage, and went off to make our fortune (not!)

When we came back with cheques the bank said we had to open a business bank account and asked for the name of the business. From nowhere Steph said 'Balls-U-Like' (we still have no idea why!) and we have been living it down ever since.

But why juggling? Well Steph has been juggling, fire eating, breathing poi swinging, stilt walking and all that stuff since she was small. Some of you may know Pete (Pete the Sweep) Rispin from Harrogate who ran a club for kids and got Steph hooked. But Annie? Well, it's all new to her (and she still can't juggle!) but there's a story you might find interesting concerning a visit to Toronto Vineyard Church a few years previously. A total stranger prayed for Annie and said she could see (a sort of picture or vision of) balls, children's parties, bubbles , that kind of thing. Said she had never had that happen before - so how about that?

How do we do business? It is important to us to run our business ethically. In our business people get paid on time, both suppliers and outworkers, and customers feel that they are getting a fair deal. "Customer delight" is 21st century buzzword that we wholeheartedly endorse - we hope our customers are truly delighted with the way we do business.
